Vanguard Alarms: Independent, established and looking to the future

Vanguard Alarms: Independent, established and looking to the future

For more than 50 years, Vanguard Alarms has been an independent security business, working with homeowners and businesses across Shropshire and the surrounding areas.

In 2026, Vanguard entered a new chapter, with a change of ownership and Dave Strawson joining the business as Managing Director.

While the ownership of Vanguard has changed, Vanguard Alarms Limited continues to operate independently, with its own team, customers and identity. The principles behind the business remain equally familiar: high professional standards, practical advice and long-term support for the people and businesses that rely on us.

For Dave, who joined Vanguard after 40 years working across the security industry, that combination of history and opportunity was an important part of the attraction.

“You don’t often get the opportunity to join a business with more than 50 years behind it and help shape what comes next. There was already a strong business here, with experienced people and customer relationships that go back years. My job isn’t to change things for the sake of changing them. It’s to build on that.”

Vanguard Alarms was established in 1974 and has spent more than five decades helping customers make practical decisions about their security.

More than 50 years of security experience

Over that time, security technology has changed almost beyond recognition.

The systems available today can provide levels of connectivity, integration, control and visibility that simply weren’t possible when Vanguard began. The risks customers face have evolved too, along with the way homes, businesses and commercial sites operate.

But good security has never simply been about installing the latest equipment.

Understanding the property or site, how it is used, where the genuine risks lie and what the customer actually needs remain fundamental to getting security right.

It’s an approach Vanguard intends to carry forward.

Respecting what’s already been built

Taking a long-established business into its next chapter means recognising the value of what’s already there.

Vanguard has customers it has supported for many years, alongside new customers joining the business today. Some come to Vanguard looking for a completely new security system. Others already have equipment in place and need someone to maintain, adapt or take over the ongoing support of it.

Those long-term relationships have particularly struck Dave since joining the business.

“I’ve spent a lot of my career in sales and product, where you’re naturally talking about what comes next: the new system, the new technology or the next project.

At Vanguard, I’m seeing much more of what happens afterwards. The servicing, support and changes years down the line, and the same customer names appearing in the diary year after year. It’s given me a different appreciation of how a business like this is built.”

That long-term view is something Vanguard wants to retain as the business grows.

Independent thinking and practical advice

Vanguard Alarms continues to operate as an independent security business.

That independence is important to the way we work.

Rather than starting with a particular product or predetermined solution, we can start with the customer: what they need to achieve, what they already have and what makes practical sense for their property, site or business.

Sometimes that means designing a new system. Sometimes an existing system can continue to do its job perfectly well with the right maintenance or changes. Increasingly, it can also mean considering how different technologies work together across intruder detection, CCTV, access control and other areas of security.

The answer won’t be the same for every customer, and it shouldn’t be.

Maintaining high standards

While Vanguard is looking forward, professional standards remain an important part of how the business operates.

The security industry carries significant responsibility. Customers are trusting the people they work with to give appropriate advice, work competently in their homes and businesses and install and maintain systems they may depend upon for many years.

Vanguard continues to work within recognised industry standards and accreditations, alongside established quality processes that support the way systems are designed, installed, maintained and supported.

For customers, those standards provide an important layer of confidence. For Vanguard, they’re simply part of doing the job properly.

Investing in what comes next

The next chapter for Vanguard isn’t about reinventing a business that has successfully operated for more than half a century.

It’s about building on it.

That includes continuing to develop the team, embracing useful new technology, strengthening relationships across the local business community and making sure Vanguard’s services continue to reflect the changing security needs of homes and businesses across the region.

It also means remaining curious about where security technology is heading.

Dave admits that particular part won’t be difficult.

“Anyone who knows me knows I love new technology. I want to know what’s coming, what it does and what it’ll integrate with.

“But technology has to earn its place. If it makes something work better, makes life easier for the customer or gives us a better way of solving a problem, I’m interested. New for the sake of new isn’t enough.”

The next chapter of Vanguard Alarms

New ownership inevitably represents change, but it doesn’t erase what came before it.

Vanguard Alarms remains an independently operated security business, rooted in Shropshire and supported by a team with considerable experience behind it.

The ambition now is to combine that foundation with fresh investment, new ideas and the opportunities presented by a rapidly evolving security industry.

For Dave, the measure of success is relatively straightforward.

“I’ve inherited a business with a good reputation and some incredibly long-standing customer relationships. I want us to keep those relationships going, build plenty more along the way and make sure Vanguard is in a strong position for the next chapter.”

After more than 50 years, Vanguard is looking forward.
